So thrilled to be able to add another element to my jewellery repertoire, with my first-ever beading workshop for beginners. This is a collab @Studioinqu, the inspiring and creative space for artists in Kew, Melbourne.⁠

It will be a relaxed and fun workshop where you can play with a range of glass Czech and ceramic beads and learn how to string a necklace and add beads to earring wires. Hopefully, it will inspire you to learn more about this amazing craft, as it did me when I first discovered beading. Making beaded earrings on my sister's dining room table years ago lead me down this incredible jewellery-making path.⁠

As you probably know by now, I work a lot with metal clay in my designs. This is an example of a piece I originally created in fine silver precious metal clay - a process that meant I had to make each pair individually which, while fun to do, is time-consuming. ⁠

These earrings were so popular, they're now part of my permanent range so I now get them cast, which means I can make them more quickly. ⁠
⁠
Sustainability is so important to me and I love that metal clay is a fully recycled material. So I'm happy to say that the caster I use is the only one in Australia (I believe), using fully recycled sterling silver in their work. ⁠
⁠
So if you buy a piece of silver jewellery from me, it will be made from either fine silver or sterling silver, each of which is a fully recycled and sustainable material.⁠

Back when I was doing a short course in metalsmith

Back when I was doing a short course in metalsmithing, someone in the class asked the tutor about metal clay. I'd never heard of metal clay, so I was interested in the response. ⁠
⁠
Traditional smiths use sheet metal and wire and skills such as filing, sawing, soldering, drilling and polishing, as well as 'lost wax' techniques, to make jewellery. Metal clay, according to the tutor, is considered outside the traditional realm and not taken all that seriously by 'traditionalists'.⁠
⁠
But many of the tools and skills needed to make jewellery from metal clay are similar to those used in traditional smithing and this amazing medium is so versatile, it opens up a whole new world of possibilities for the craftsperson. ⁠
⁠
Silver metal clay is made from minute particles of fine silver (it comes in other metals too such as bronze, copper and gold, but silver is the main one I work with), as well as an organic binder and water. From rolling, forming and drying to firing with a torch or a kiln, once fired metal clay behaves just like sheet metal. The piece can be soldered to other components or have stones added, before finishing with filing, sanding and polishing. ⁠
⁠
I love that fine silver metal clay is made from fully recycled silver so it's a wholly sustainable product. That's a big plus in my studio as I work to ensure my practice is as environmentally-friendly as possible. ⁠
⁠
You won't know to look at a piece whether it's made from fine silver clay (999) or cast in recycled sterling silver (925), as they look and feel the same. But if you'd like to know more about the components in a piece of jewellery you're interested in, please shoot me a DM. JSxx⁠

As I start to think about new collections for 2022

As I start to think about new collections for 2022, I took a moment to look back over the past couple of years and see how far my jewellery has come in such a short time. From simple handmade beaded hoops, bracelets and silver disc pieces, to exploring the world of gold jewellery and the addition of 14kt gold filled wire, and then adding 22kt gold plated discs to the collection. And more recently, my latest offering with the addition of beautiful and timeless freshwater pearls. I've come a long way in 2.5 years.⁠
⁠
My jewellery has evolved as my skills have grown and developed, and as I love life-long learning I'm all about the next new thing to learn. It keeps me excited and motivated, and wanting to push ahead with new pieces. Of course, I have to balance that with the fact that this always means new tools and supplies! ⁠

These beautiful, classic earrings feature discs with earring studs and stunning pearl drops.⁠

Each disc is cast in recycled sterling silver and then plated in 22kt gold, for a rich deep gold look. Discs measure approximately 18mm in diameter. ⁠
⁠
The pearls are freshwater, meaning they were farmed, or cultured, in fresh water as opposed to the naturally occurring salt water pearls. While perfectly round pearls are the ideal, I think the beautiful organic shape of these freshwater ones is part of their appeal and adds to their gorgeous boho look. Each pearl is hand-wrapped by me onto the disc with 14kt gold filled wire, and measures approximately 15mm in length, although this varies with each pearl.⁠
⁠
While the discs are absolutely consistent in shape and texture, the organic nature of the pearls makes each pair different and unique. ⁠
⁠
